报告题目：Physics of the smallest particles: a brief introduction

报告摘要

　　Particle physics deals with the fundamental building blocks of matter and the forces that act between them.  The beginnings of the field reach back to 1897 with the discovery of the electron by J. J. Thomson.  In the intervening 130 years, our understanding of nature at the smallest scales has greatly evolved, with current experimental facilities among the largest structures built and operated by humans.

　　In this lecture aimed at interested undergraduate students I will try to address three questions:  How do we learn about nature at these small scales?  What is our current understanding?  Why is the field still interesting?  

I will show exemplary measurements of the BESIII experiment at the Institute for High Energy Physics of CAS in Beijing to motivate the need for further detailed studies.

嘉宾简介

　　WOLFGANG GRADL，德国人，现为德国美因茨大学教授，长期参与北京谱仪BESIII国际合作组，并曾担任该合作组的联合负责人‌。‌‌主要研究领域集中在强子谱学，粲偶素及类粲偶素态，含裸粲夸克的介子及振幅分析，以及味物理中寻找CP破坏，以及稀有强子B介子衰变和D介子强子衰变中的新物理效应。
